How to Read More | 9 Tips to Improve Your Reading Quality
Besides being a great way to escape and unwind, reading increases your knowledge, focus, and sharpens your intuition.
The biggest problem though is to find an appropriate time to read. David Arnoux, Co-founder of Growth Tribe, was able to accomplish this by using the following 9 tips.
RESOURCES & LINKS ____________________________________________ Youtube - https://www.youtube.com/ Apple Podcasts - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/apple-podcasts/id525463029 Audible - https://www.audible.co.uk/ Blinkist - https://www.blinkist.com/ ____________________________________________
The first tip on how to read more is not to read the book. We know, that might seem controversial. What David likes to do is to search the author's name on Youtube or podcast apps. This practice allows you to eliminate books that are not a priority for you right now. Most of the time, you'll find a 40-minute resource that explains the idea that the book covers.
The second tip is on how to read more books is to use audiobooks. It's the best way to experience a book while commuting. You might prefer the smell and texture of an actual book in your hands, but the best part of audiobooks is that you can sample books before buying them. In short, using technology gives you more opportunities to digest even more books throughout the year.
The third tip is to use the app Blinkist. If you want a quick synopsis of a book, this tool offers the core of it so you can then decide if you'd like to read the entire thing. This tool is perfect to de-risk the quality of your reading.
The fourth tip is to pre-test a physical book by actually sampling three random pages in the book. This takes 3 minutes and gives you an excellent taste for the style of the author. This isn't exactly a tip on how to read more but it will help you read better books.
The fifth tip is to follow the three-strike rule. Have you ever had a rough time reading a book that has been recommended to you over and over? If after three times you realise that you don't want to pick it up, you're probably not enjoying it. Move on and read books you enjoy. This is directly linked to the next tip!
The sixth tip is to read multiple books. Having a variety of books to read at once is challenging and keeps you from getting bored. It also helps to mix up the numerous books that you're reading.
The seventh book is to plan your reading. It means that instead of reading every chapter, you will pre-select the sections of the book that are most interesting for you ahead of time.
Tip number eight is to skip the introduction of the book. This one might seem controversial, but it helps you get to the subject matter right away. Plus, you can always return to the introduction for a more broad perspective of your book!
The ninth tip is to de-risk paragraphs within the books. This means you should scan the first and last sentence of the section to determine whether it's relevant to read it or not.
Now, that doesn't mean that you have to follow all the tips. Take the ones that fit best for your goals and habits.
