The past year has been a rollercoaster. If you are looking to upgrade your data skills and stay future-proof, then you have come to the right place!
We surveyed 1,300 data experts and leaders to find out what the top strengths and weaknesses were.
Here are the top 5 skills you need to master as a data professional:
1. The first data skill you need is Analytics and Machine Learning capabilities:
We don’t have enough people to deal with all the data out there, and we don’t have enough expertise within many companies.
A recent poll from the Kearney group showed that 50% of companies relied on data more than ever, but 47% still didn’t have a quantifiable analytics business case.
And the same goes for machine learning, with McKinsey showing that only 50% of businesses have adopted AI.
Evaluate how and if you need these, and then double down on implement these key skills!
2. The second data skill to learn is Running Machine Learning Pilot Projects:
You might be thinking, well, if I don’t have Machine Learning skills, how am I supposed to run pilot projects?
Adopting an experimental culture and running pilot projects will help you determine how you can use this technology.
Are the pilot projects working? Great, double down on them.
Do you realise you don’t need machine learning at all, just analytics? Nothing wrong with that.
THAT is the case for many companies. But if you don’t try, you won’t find out.
3. The third data skill to learn is Developing a Clear Data Strategy
You might be wondering, why is developing a data strategy in the third place? Shouldn’t it be the first and most important skill?
Well, it’s coming in third place, because it doesn’t make sense to have a data strategy without projects to support it.
If you have projects, then determine the type of strategy you need and the roles to be filled and get executing!
4. The fourth data skill you need to learn is Standardising Processes:
Also related to your data strategy. This is about creating robust processes to coordinate your data projects.
